Sunday report

Mixed nations tournament

After a good night sleep it was time for the mixed nations tournament. It all began at 9:30 am, the players gathered in the sportshal the “Toekomstgroep”. The nations were equally divided in 4 teams: A, B, C and D. The competition was A against B, C against D and so on. The teams had two hours to play sixteen matches on five courts. But of course after the first round we had a delay of half an hour. It was too good to be true to do all those matches in 2 hours. The games were really close, for example a mens double was won in three sets (15-17, 15-4, 16-17).

Between the matches the players were really getting to know each other and that's what this tournament was for. The awarding of the prices is going to be on Thursday. The players were done with the tournament around five o’clock and they had to be on the athletics track at seven o’clock. So we had to move the awarding to another day so the players could eat conveniently and then go to the opening ceremony. What we can say is that the mixed nations tournament was a success.

The opening ceremony

After a good meal the players gathered, in their uniform, at the FBK sports-park. The ceremony was being held on the athletics court. It was really in the style of the Olympic Games. Every nation gathered all their players and went on the court in rows of four (at least the leaders tried). They also had their flag and a big net of balloons. When a nation reached the stage they were introduced and the National Hymn was played. Every nation went through that. After the Dutch Hymn was played the mayor came to say some words. She made a little mistake by saying “I now officially open the Youth Games of 2007”. But she quickly recovered and said “2006”. At that sentence all the balloons were let out of the net and they flew away. And then it was time for the magicians to do their thing. They played with sand, paper and even Malibu bottles. That was the end of the openings ceremony.

Finally everybody could go home and get some sleep. But some weren’t. They got a tour through the town. Also the leaders of it all weren’t ready for the sleep mode. They had a get together party at Gerard’s house. The coaches of the other lands were there too. It was real fun!
